About Menya Toto

Let me introduce you to Menya Toto, a ramen restaurant that feels like a small but confident statement in the heart of Takayama, Japan. Tucked away at 〒506-0007 Gifu, Takayama, Sowamachi, 1 Chome−50−50, this spot has the kind of presence you notice not because it’s flashy, but because it knows exactly what it is doing. From the moment you hear the name Menya Toto, you can already expect a place that takes ramen seriously, yet keeps the experience relaxed and welcoming. The vibe leans classic and cozy, making it a great stop whether you are wandering the streets nearby or purposely hunting for a satisfying bowl. I like how the focus stays firmly on ramen culture, while still offering service options that fit different moods, including dine-in for those who want to slow down, takeaway for quick comfort, and delivery when you would rather stay in. The atmosphere pairs nicely with the offerings, especially if you enjoy a cold beer or another alcoholic drink alongside a steaming bowl, because it adds a social layer to the meal. That balance between food and drink makes Menya Toto feel easygoing without losing its identity as a ramen-first restaurant. It is also the kind of place where conversations flow naturally, partly because the setting encourages you to sit, eat, and enjoy the moment rather than rush through it. When introducing Menya Toto to friends, I often describe it as dependable in the best way, since it delivers a clear ramen experience with no unnecessary distractions and no confusing menu choices. Everything feels intentional, from its location in Gifu to the way it welcomes both locals and visitors, creating a space that feels lived-in and authentic. Menya Toto fits comfortably into everyday dining while still feeling special enough to recommend, especially if you appreciate ramen served in a setting that respects tradition but stays friendly, accessible, and consistently inviting.

Now we went here because of the good rating and it didn't disappoint. Just a bit far from where your tour bus might be parked but well worth it. 900 yen ramen. Affordable but definitely good flavor. Personally, had the basic ramen. Loved the chunk of meat. Flavorful, tender and soft.

The best Takayama ramen, without question. Don’t go to the other touristy places - this little ramen shop run by a very kind couple is miles better, and no queue since it’s not on the “main street”. Cannot recommend enough!

Nice bowls of ramen. Light and subtle flavors. Simple menu. We got both bowls—the Takayama ramen had thinner noodles and a broth with a stronger dashi flavor. Both had just the right amount of sodium! I can’t say which one I liked better, but slightly prefer the noodles in the Takayama; they were thinner, curly, and had a nice bite to it. Try both ramen with a little bit of white pepper, it really brings out the flavor. The pork in the Takayama and the chicken in the shoyu were both cooked perfectly. Tender, but not too meaty/gamey. Service was friendly and fast. The shop is off a main road and not too hard to find. We went at 11:15 right after they opened and there was no line.

I’m in love with the traditional tatami seating by the window, old school vibe with jazz in the background. A relaxing afternoon. Shoyu ramen was good. I prefer thin noodles. Chashu bowl was delicious too. Great price service and atmosphere. Kid-friendly! Would totally come back.

Glad that I skipped the ramen shops with long queues of tourists. Found this place reading the Google reviews and this is such a hidden gem! The place is run by a couple serving really really good ramen! The noodles are thin and springy and the soup is oh so umami! Very flavourful ( not salty at all) that I finished all the soup (never once have I finished the ramen soup as I always find it salty towards the end)! Will definitely be back for the ramen if I visit takayama again.

Went here with my Kouhai ( juniors at work) Cant say enough good words for their ramen. Its a Family-run business as it seems. The ramen is very flavorful, its like the noodles is cooked in beef broth. And the shoyu soup base is just as flavorful. The shop itself is also nice and clean. Definitely a must visit ramen shop here in Takayama.

Cozy ramen house at Takayama. The humble looking noodles took us by surprise, the noodles were springy and cooked perfectly, soup was flavourful and light, not cloying. Not the typical Ichiran ramen type. The char siu was so tender! We sat at the counter seats and watched the chef prepared the noodles. You can sense the dedication and precision in the way he worked. We regretted not going for the upsized noodles! Must try if you are at takayama! Highly recommended!

Best Takayama ramen, so simple and sol good especially the meat as well as the noodles and soup! We love it here and came back 2 years later, still amazing! We walked right in with no line and it is the sweetest couple that runs the restaurant. You sit on the floor and eat, but that is also a part of the traditional experience. Can only recommend!
